Now that I have your attention. I should clarify that statement should read; just say no to social media until you have a fully designed plan for your audience. I have found that most people do not truly understand how and when to use social media. Don’t spin your wheels in frustration trying to build an audience. Sit down and map out a plan!

Social media has a place, and it does add value to marketing. HOWEVER, there are only a few instances where you start with social media. In my opinion, that is rare unless you are a teenager or your business, is positioning yourself as an influencer. So, where do you start? With all the other things you need in your marketing strategy first!

Social media is generally a time suck for content development and requires immediacy in responding to demand viewers with a slim chance it will result in a sale. For that reason, I say start with social media last, after all the other marketing puzzle pieces are in place.

Now that you have taken a step back to assess the full marketing landscape of your business, let’s review some things you can do to avoid a headache.

What should I consider before starting a social media page?

  1. What platform(s) are you going to post on?
  2. Is your target audience even on the platform you want to contribute content to? If the answer is no, hard stop. Don’t waste your time with this channel as a primary means of communicating with your audience.
  3. Have you identified a communication cadence and content strategy?
  4. Do you understand the fundamentals of how social media works and where it fits in your overall marketing strategy? For example, many users don’t understand “mentions” and “hashtags.”
  5. Do you have the capacity to manage social media platforms? One of the worst things is start posting content, get an audience engaged, only to disappear.

What is social media great for?

  • Building your brand
  • Serving as a proof point that your business is legitimate
  • Creating a buzz about a product or service
  • Drive traffic back to your website or online store
  • Possibly boost your search engine ranking
